transforming young lives and communities through music

The Mayor of Islington's Charity 2015/16

Support Music First

"His confidence and behaviour have markedly improved"

Your support could have a transformational impact on many young lives. The musical and personal achievements of the children participating in the Music First programme have continued to surpass expectations. Children, parents, carers, teachers and classroom assistants are all telling us that Music First’s intervention is improving confidence, self-esteem, behaviour, team skills and aspiration in the participants.

The Deputy Head of St. Mark’s CE Primary School said “It has increased the self-esteem of many of the pupils and has given children the chance to shine … In particular, I have noticed a mature and responsible attitude developing in several boys in the class who have discovered a talent in their musical ability.”

A Year 6 boy began learning the violin six months ago. Since joining Music First’s Highbury Grove School Hub, a transformation has happened. He is now enthusiastic, shows a strong ability to compose music, and he takes pride out of his musical progression.

SoundsCreative Projects - soundscreativeprojects.co.uk

SoundsCreative Projects is a social enterprise that conjures up engaging ways of gathering people of all ages together through playful, high quality musical experiences.   Through musical workshops, neighbourhood projects and performance events, SoundsCreative aims to encourage collaboration, create conversations and connect people.  Projects are run in music venues, art galleries & schools and co-created with like-minded arts organisations.

As a friend of Music First we work together to run creative workshop sessions across both primary hubs and currently run the SoundsCreative Ensemble (a creative band for young instrumentalists who want to have fun exploring & composing ideas together) in partnership with Music First scholarship support.

National Orchestra for All (NOFA) - www.nofa.org.uk

The National Orchestra for All (NOFA), works with young people aged 11-18 from across England. Inspired by El Sistema’s vision of music as a vehicle for social transformation, NOFA is aimed at young people who are passionate about music but, through no fault of their own, face barriers to musical progress and music-making. NOFA’s players are of all standards and do not audition. Instead, they are nominated for commitment and dedication to music by teachers and music educators working in some of the most difficult schools and education authorities in the country. Secondary aged students from Music First have been nominated by Music First hub leaders to join the orchestra since 2012

Arts First - www.artsfirst.org.uk

Arts First is the lead organisation for the Islington Music Education Hub. Working alongside our many partners we aspire to deliver the best possible music education opportunities to children and young people and to work with community and professional musicians to make Islington a music rich borough. Music First is a unique music charity within our music education hub and we strive to support it by introducing professional orchestras to the children of Music First to build performance opportunities and intensive involvement with

professional musicians.
