transforming young lives and communities through music

Music First Islington Youth Orchestra (IYO)

The Music First Islington Youth Orchestra (IYO) was formed in September 2015, offering primary and secondary school pupils in Islington the chance to play in a large ensemble. The new orchestra will encourage the further development of the most musically promising primary age pupils, providing a new opportunity to perform in an orchestral setting to pupils who may otherwise be denied the chance through lack of family income. The IYO bridges an identified gap across the borough to provide the next step in our pupils' musical progression.

The IYO gives pupils the chance to:

  • explore a wide and engaging selection of musical repertoire
  • develop ensemble/orchestra specific skills (performing with a conductor, blending their part with the section)
  • try out different techniques and styles of playing on their instrument
  • recognise and understand notation and different elements of music theory
  • master key performance skills (managing nerves)
  • develop good aural skills (listening to others in the section)

It also gives us the chance to recognise the achievements made by the pupils thus far, and encourages them to continue with their studies. Hub pupils moving onto secondary school are invited to join the IYO, to ensure they continue to progress and enjoy music making with students in the wider community. In order to join the orchestra, pupils must be in years 5-8, and above Grade 2 standard in an orchestral instrument.
