Welcome to the Hub @ Highbury Grove
Launched in April 2010, the Music First Thursday Hub at Highbury Grove School brings together 75 pupils from five local primary schools – Laycock, Gillespie, Canonbury, Highbury Quadrant and Newington Green. Some pupils have been learning their instrument for two years, while for some the Hub is their first experience of learning an instrument and having formal music training.
The pupils' ages range from six to eleven, and we currently have students learning strings, brass and woodwind. The main emphasis is on ensuring that students enjoy making music together regardless of their ability and that their progress on their instrument is supported through small group lessons.
A typical session consists of choir and musicianship session, an instrumental lessons and an orchestra rehearsal. We currently have four different levels of orchestra groups. All sessions are carefully planned and then evaluated by the teaching staff to ensure that a cohesive learning approach is given across all sessions. We have ten tutors who have a vast array of experience in music education, and they are supported by Teaching Assistants from all the primary schools.
The Hub is led by Kirsty Wilcockson, Community Leader for Highbury Grove and Director of Operations for Music First.
